Ubisoft’s plans for the Assassin’s Creed franchise in 2022 included the announcement of several upcoming titles, including AC Hexe alongside Red and AC: Mirage. However, following its initial teaser, information about the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed installment has been scarce. Yet, recent leaks suggest that some new details have surfaced online.
Insider Gaming has reportedly obtained exclusive gameplay footage of Assassin’s Creed Hexe, with the condition that it remains unpublished. The game appears to be in its early stages of development and is expected to launch in 2026.
Assassin’s Creed Hexe is slated to debut on the Infinity platform, which is rumored to be a live-service platform for future Assassin’s Creed games. According to a 2022 Bloomberg report, the game will be set in the 16th-century Holy Roman Empire and will revolve around themes of witchcraft. Players will take on the role of Elsa, a lone female protagonist endowed with supernatural powers.
The leaked in-development footage shared with the website provides a glimpse of Elsa’s witchcraft abilities in Assassin’s Creed Hexe. In the footage, 16th-century German soldiers pursue the character, prompting her to employ her powers. She evades capture by possessing a nearby cat, allowing players to control the feline and create distractions by smashing glass bottles to divert the soldiers’ attention. The game adopts a dark and gloomy atmosphere reflective of the era, offering a linear experience reminiscent of older Assassin’s Creed titles.
Furthermore, Assassin’s Creed Hexe is set to introduce a new Fear System inspired by the Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’s Jack the Ripper DLC. This system enables players to incapacitate groups of enemies by instilling fear through various actions. Given the widespread fear of witches during the period, this mechanic fits seamlessly with the game’s narrative, where suspected witches faced trials and execution.
The incorporation of witchcraft lore raises intriguing questions about the storyline. In the Assassin’s Creed universe, which intertwines technology and the supernatural, Elsa’s possession of supernatural abilities suggests a deeper connection to the game’s lore. Perhaps Elsa is a reincarnation of a deity in this era, but the exact reason for her powers remains ambiguous. Nevertheless, it’s a concept that promises an engaging exploration.
