Apple’s Generative AI features have garnered significant attention, with anticipation reaching new heights. A recent report from Bloomberg has shed light on Apple’s plans in this realm. Apple is reportedly in talks with Google to incorporate Google’s Gemini Artificial Intelligence engine into iPhones.
This potential collaboration could be a game-changer in the AI industry. Both Apple and Google have been aggressively expanding their AI capabilities. A partnership between the two tech giants could lead to groundbreaking advancements. For Google’s Gemini chatbot, this collaboration could be particularly significant, especially considering recent controversies.
Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has already confirmed that Apple’s Generative AI features will debut later this year. The company is focused on integrating various AI features into the upcoming iOS 18, primarily leveraging its own models. However, these enhancements are geared towards on-device features rather than cloud-based services, according to reports. Therefore, a partnership with Google could enable the delivery of a wide range of generative AI features, such as image generation, essay writing from a single text prompt, and other complex tasks that require cloud-based processing.
The recent negotiations between Apple and Google have generated considerable excitement. However, they also suggest that Apple may have lacked the robust AI technology needed to compete, let alone surpass its rivals.
Since early last year, Apple has reportedly been testing its large language model, Ajax. Additionally, several employees have been granted access to a basic chatbot named Apple GPT. Despite these efforts, Gurman, citing various sources, suggests that “Apple’s AI technology remains inferior to tools from Google and other competitors.” Therefore, a partnership seems to be a more viable option for Apple.
This agreement could enable Apple to introduce Gemini-powered AI features to its iPhone range. However, this doesn’t mean that Google won’t benefit significantly from the deal. With Apple’s vast user base of approximately 2 billion users, Gemini could potentially become the most widely used AI chatbot globally. Additionally, this partnership could help Gemini recover from recent controversies.
According to the report, while Apple and Google are actively negotiating, a final agreement may not be announced until at least June, when Apple typically hosts its annual developer’s conference (WWDC 2024). Gurman also raises the possibility that Apple could choose to employ generative AI technology from a different company, such as OpenAI or Anthropic.
Regardless of the direction Apple chooses, we will have to wait until June to gain a clearer understanding of Apple’s vision for Generative AI.
