Apple’s AI initiatives have dominated headlines in recent months. Reports indicate that the tech giant is preparing to introduce Generative AI to iPhones in the forthcoming iOS 18 update. Additionally, according to a recent report by Mark Gurman, Apple is poised to overhaul its Mac lineup with the introduction of new AI-centric M4 chips. These in-house processors are set to significantly enhance performance through advanced Artificial Intelligence features.
It’s common knowledge that Apple has fallen behind its rivals in the AI arena. While Google and Microsoft have launched AI chatbots over a year ago, Apple has yet to catch up. Microsoft’s emphasis on AI with Qualcomm Snapdragon X series chips is noteworthy. However, Apple is making strides in this domain, with plans to integrate Generative AI into its devices. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, has hinted at these features arriving by late 2024. The impending release of iOS 18 and M4 processors could be the game-changer we’ve been anticipating.
The upcoming M4 chips are anticipated to maintain the 3-nanometer process seen in the M3 chips. Nevertheless, Apple’s supplier, TSMC, is set to introduce enhancements aimed at elevating performance and energy efficiency. Additionally, Apple plans to integrate an upgraded Neural Engine with a greater number of cores to handle AI operations. With the introduction of M4 chips, Mac desktops could potentially accommodate up to 512GB of Unified Memory, a notable increase from the existing 192GB limitation.
As per reports, the M4 processor will be available in three variants: Conan, positioned as an entry-level chip; Brava, designed as a mid-range option; and Hydra, representing the top-tier M4 model.
Currently, there isn’t a set timeline for the release of the M4 processor. Apple unveiled the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips in October 2023, suggesting a similar timeframe for the M4 lineup this year. Given Apple’s plans to introduce Generative AI, an early refresh seems logical. Gurman suggests that Apple will likely revamp its entire Mac lineup with the M4 chips between late 2024 and early 2025.
The initial recipients of Apple’s AI-driven M4 processors will include the 14-inch MacBook Pro, 16-inch MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac. These will be followed by the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models in spring 2025, the Mac Studio in mid-2025, and finally, the Mac Pro in late 2025.
