The next-generation iOS 18 is expected to overhaul several popular built-in apps such as Safari, Photos, Notes, Mail, and Fitness. Moreover, based on a recent report by Mark Gurman, the Cupertino tech giant is expected to introduce a new Passwords App in the upcoming iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15.
The new native app is expected to provide a simpler way to access stored login information on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. With a dedicated Passwords app, Apple aims to compete with popular third-party password apps like 1Password and LastPass.
Although Apple already provides a Password feature in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS, it is currently located deep within the Settings app. This makes it challenging for new users or those unfamiliar with the Settings app to find the Password option. Over time, Apple has introduced new password features such as storing logins and passwords, one-time passcode support, password sharing, and more.
Similar to the current Password feature within the Settings app, the upcoming Passwords app will leverage Apple’s iCloud Keychain service to synchronize usernames and passwords across all Apple devices. It will encompass all the functionalities supported by the Passwords section in the Settings app and will extend its availability to Vision Pro and Windows PCs. Moreover, the standalone Passwords app will allow users to import passwords from other applications such as 1Password and LastPass.
The app will feature logins and passwords, categorizing them into various sections such as accounts, Wi-Fi network passwords, and Passkeys, which are password alternatives authenticated by Face ID or Touch ID. Similar to many existing password managers, the app will automatically fill in data on websites and apps during user logins.
The Passwords app is anticipated to launch on Monday, the first day of WWDC 2024, coinciding with Apple’s announcements regarding its AI strategy and significant software updates. We anticipate Apple unveiling some innovative changes at WWDC 2024, and it will be intriguing to discover what plans they have in store for their users.
