Apple Announces May 7 Event for Unveiling New iPads

New iPads have been long overdue, marking the longest gap between iPad launches by Apple. Fortunately, the wait is now over, as Apple has announced an event scheduled for May 7, 2024, where it is anticipated to unveil new iPads. The event, themed ‘Let Loose,’ prominently features the Apple logo alongside an Apple Pencil.

Despite repeated delays in the iPad launch, Mark Gurman recently predicted in his newsletter that Apple would likely hold an event in the week of May 6, which has proven to be accurate this time.

From the official event poster, it is apparent that iPads will be the main focus of the announcement. Rumors suggest that Apple will introduce new 11-inch and 13-inch OLED iPad Pro models featuring the new M3 chipset. Additionally, two new iPad Air models with the M2 chip are expected to debut at the event. This time, Apple is likely expanding its mid-range iPad lineup with the launch of the first-ever 12.9-inch iPad Air.

In addition to iPads, Apple is rumored to unveil a new and redesigned Magic Keyboard featuring a larger trackpad and an aluminum enclosure. Furthermore, there are speculations about a new Apple Pencil with visionOS support and a new “squeeze” gesture.

The highlight of the event is expected to be the announcement of new iPad Pro models, as Apple is reportedly transitioning from IPS LCD panels to OLED ones, which it markets as the Liquid Retina XDR Display. This change would result in improved contrast and brightness.

Naturally, the upgrade in display technology is likely to result in increased costs. Mark Gurman has already confirmed that a price hike is expected for the iPad Pro models. Currently, the iPad Pro starts at $799 for the 11-inch variant, while the 12.9-inch variant costs $1099.

Regarding the iPad and iPad mini, it is anticipated that Apple will refresh them at an event later this year.
