Apple and Meta May Collaborate on AI Features for iOS 18, Ending Long-Standing Rivalry

Apple and Meta have been at odds for quite some time, clashing over privacy changes, app store policies, and more. The rivalry between Apple’s CEO Tim Cook and Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg has been well-documented, with neither speaking kindly of the other. However, this long-standing conflict might soon evolve into an unexpected partnership.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is reportedly in talks to integrate Meta’s Generative AI model into Apple Intelligence. Additionally, Apple has been in discussions with AI startups Perplexity and Anthropic about incorporating their models into Apple Intelligence.

An alliance between Apple and Meta could mirror the existing partnership Apple has formed with ChatGPT. Currently, ChatGPT stands as the only outside organization collaborating with Apple on artificial intelligence projects. The Apple Intelligence system mainly employs local processing on devices to handle inquiries and safeguard user privacy when utilizing AI capabilities on Apple products. In instances where a query requires processing by an external model, Siri will seek the user’s approval before proceeding.

For example, with iOS 18 and Apple Intelligence enabled, if you ask Siri to “Plan a two-day trip to London,” Siri will inquire if you want to send that request to ChatGPT. With your permission, OpenAI’s ChatGPT model will handle the request, and the response will appear in the Siri interface.

Notably, ChatGPT does not collect user data and deletes information after processing requests. Additionally, Apple does not pay any company for integrating their AI models into Apple Intelligence, making this functionality free for users. Members who have a ChatGPT account can log in to utilize the enhanced capabilities offered by the ChatGPT Plus subscription.

Apple has publicly stated that ChatGPT won’t be the only option available, as they plan to offer a variety of models beyond OpenAI. The company aims to provide customers with options to select from various third-party AI platforms, complementing their own built-in technologies. In his address, Craig Federighi, who leads Apple’s software division, indicated that the company’s goal was to offer users the most exceptional choice possible. According to his remarks, Apple’s clientele would be best served at present by utilizing OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform.

A report from The Wall Street Journal suggests a possible collaboration between Meta’s AI technology and Apple’s intelligence systems. Should this alliance come to fruition, it would bolster Apple’s position in the artificial intelligence sector and mark an uncommon instance of cooperation between the creator of iPhones and a major social media corporation.

Apple Intelligence is set to launch this fall with the iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia Betas. It will be available on iPhone 15 Pro models, the upcoming iPhone 16 series, and iPads and Macs with M1 or newer chips. Initially, Apple Intelligence will support US English, with additional languages and regions to be added gradually.
