Apex Legends introduces ‘Exotic Shards’ for customizing Apex Artifacts.

In Season 20’s Shadow Society collection event, Apex Legends unveiled Apex Artifacts, a fresh set of universal heirlooms. These artifacts coexist with Legend-specific heirlooms, offering mythic melee items tailored to particular legends.

With the event’s debut, the Cobalt Katar marked the inaugural Apex Artifact, granting players the ability to wield the heirloom across any legend of their choice. In Season 21, Respawn Entertainment fulfills a much-awaited desire by introducing the option to personalize these heirlooms. While players can now tailor their heirlooms with a plethora of customization choices, there’s a caveat to consider.

Customizing Apex Artifacts requires Exotic Shards.

Unlocking customization options for Apex Artifacts isn’t automatic or complimentary. Apex Legends introduces a new in-game currency, Exotic Shards, to facilitate this. Players can acquire Exotic Shards through purchases in the in-game store or by earning them via the Premium Battle Pass. Once obtained, Exotic Shards can be utilized to unlock desired customization choices.

What aspects of the Apex Artifact can you customize? That’s a great question!

Every Apex Artifact consists of three components: the base (representing the blade), the theme (which influences the artifact’s design), and the power source (a glowing orb-like element in the center). Each power source comes with a unique emote, which can be activated or deactivated through the in-game emote menu.

Thanks to Respawn Entertainment granting Beebom an early preview of the upcoming features in-game, we have a glimpse of what the customization menu for the Cobalt Katar Artifact looks like. Check it out:

Season 21’s Upheaval brings five fresh customization options for the Apex Artifact purchased earlier this year. Joining the Cobalt Katar base bundle are the Electrum, Gladius, Rhodium, Molten, and Nitride customization sets. Each set offers a distinct base, color scheme, themed design, unique power source, and even a customized death box appearance upon defeating enemies. Respawn shared that players can unlock over 200 combinations using Exotic Shards.

With this update, Exotic Shards join existing in-game currencies like Apex Coins, Crafting Metals, Heirloom Shards, and Legend Tokens. Are you considering investing real-world money in Exotic Shards to personalize your katar? Drop your opinions in the comments box underneath.
