Dark mode has remained one of the most sought-after customization choices for apps and system interfaces. While many apps now natively support dark mode on Android, some still lack this feature. To address this, Google is gearing up to introduce a functionality in Android 15 that will enable users to enforce dark mode on those apps.
Most Android users likely have at least one app on their device that doesn’t offer dark mode support. Thankfully, the new “Make all apps dark” option is set to address this issue, ensuring uniform dark mode across all apps. Android enthusiasts might be familiar with a comparable feature called “override force-dark” found in Android’s developer options, which similarly enforces dark mode.
Mishaal Rahman notes that the latest “make all apps dark” feature, according to Google, supports an even wider range of apps compared to the “override dark-mode” feature, which is primarily aimed at developers. However, apps have the option to opt out of this feature, rendering it ineffective for users. As an alternative, users are left with the choice to invert colors, which can distort the colors displayed on the screen.
Mishaal, through Android Authority , reveals that the feature was present in Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 but has remained concealed since then. Once activated, users can locate it in Settings > Accessibility > Color and motion. Here’s a visual representation of how the app’s appearance changes before and after activating this feature.
The anticipated “Make all apps dark” option may debut in one of the forthcoming Android 15 Beta builds. According to Mishaal, who has thoroughly tested it, the feature is fully operational, signaling it’s high time for Google to activate it. With Android 15 Beta 2 slated for release after Google I/O 2024 , there’s a possibility it might be included in the same. What are your opinions on this feature? Let us know in the comments below.
