The Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 showcased a flurry of tech announcements and launches in February. Noteworthy among them is the collaboration between Motorola and Corning. During the event, Motorola unveiled a partnership with Corning to incorporate Gorilla Glass into all their devices set to debut this year.
Corning, the producer of Gorilla Glass, employs a unique manufacturing technique to bolster the durability and scratch resistance of smartphone display glass. Their latest innovation, Gorilla Glass Victus 3, is touted as the toughest glass they’ve developed yet, surpassing Gorilla Glass Victus 2, 1, and Gorilla Glass 5 in resilience and strength.
Although specifics regarding the Gorilla Glass variants Motorola will utilize remain undisclosed, the company did exhibit Gorilla Glass 5 and Victus 2 during the MWC demonstration.
Motorola’s adoption of Gorilla Glass is familiar, as most flagship models already incorporate the latest versions. Therefore, this announcement pertains to Gorilla Glass being introduced to the forthcoming entry-level or mid-range Motorola smartphones.
This announcement is particularly beneficial for budget-conscious consumers, as the inclusion of Gorilla Glass is expected to prolong the lifespan of displays and shield them from damage due to scratches and accidental drops. While no display is entirely shatter-proof, having added protection significantly reduces the risk of damage.
Motorola’s statement regarding the announcement states, “At Motorola, we prioritize providing advanced technology that is accessible across all product lines. We’re thrilled to reaffirm our dedication to durability by announcing that all Motorola devices in 2024 the lineup will incorporate Corning Gorilla Glass, beginning in the latter half of this year.”
Ensuring display protection has become a top priority for OEMs, leading some companies to develop methods for strengthening display glass. Xiaomi’s approach is exemplified by the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, where they’ve implemented their proprietary glass strengthening process to increase toughness and resistance to scratches. This technology, known as Xiaomi Shield Glass, underscores the company’s commitment to enhancing the durability of its devices.
