AI-powered Cowriter Coming to Microsoft Notepad

As Microsoft prepares for the release of Windows 12 and AI PCs in 2024, the company is intensifying its efforts by integrating AI features across various platforms. The Redmond giant is currently focused on incorporating AI capabilities into Notepad. Referred to as “Cowriter,” this AI-powered feature is designed to enable text rewriting, paragraph extension, tone modification, and more all within the Notepad app. Here’s a comprehensive overview of the upcoming AI features for the Notepad app.

Notepad to Integrate Cowriter AI

Credit goes to PhantomOfEarth on X (formerly Twitter) for uncovering the new Notepad feature that enables content rewriting using AI. As Microsoft is currently in the testing phase, the Cowriter tool’s placeholder has been added to the latest version of Notepad.

These changes have been identified in the Insider Preview build of Windows 11, and the Notepad version in question is 11.2312.17.0.

It’s important to note that installing the mentioned version does not automatically activate the feature. The rollout of this feature may follow a similar process to the MS Paint Cocreator, possibly involving a waiting list. Moreover, there appears to be a credit limit for utilizing the Cocreator feature in the Notepad app, with credits being replenished every few days.

Additionally, there’s an “Explain with Copilot” menu in the context menu, and the Cowriter tool provides options to modify the format, including Paragraph, List, Business, and Academic. While some users may find the AI feature in Notepad noteworthy (pun intended), certain Windows power users express dissatisfaction with Microsoft’s strategy of incorporating AI tools across various applications.

Microsoft has recently referred to Edge as an “AI Browser” and introduced a new Copilot key on Windows laptop keyboards. Whether embraced or not, it’s evident that AI will play a central role in the future of Windows 12. What are your thoughts on this development? Do express your thoughts in the comments section.
