A beta version of Windows 11 has recently surfaced, unveiling an intriguing new feature called Automatic Super-Resolution in the settings. This feature promises to dynamically upscale the resolution of your games, potentially enhancing their visual quality.
The details were disclosed by the X user (previously known as @PhantomOfEarth on Twitter), who also hinted that Auto SR would rely on an NPU rather than a GPU.
The Insider build version 26052 of Windows 11 introduces a new AI-based feature. As per the description, Automatic Super-Resolution (Auto SR) is designed to enhance supported games by leveraging AI for smoother gameplay with improved details. Additionally, there are indications that this upcoming feature might extend its benefits to video playback.
The setting for this Insider build can be found within System > Display > Graphics settings. Interestingly, while the insider build notes (linked above) do not mention the new Auto SR feature, it appears to be accessible to specific users.
As depicted above, there is a default toggle for Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR). Additionally, users have the option to enable or disable Auto SR on a per-game basis under Custom Settings for applications. But what exactly is Auto Super Resolution?
According to the description provided, Auto SR utilizes artificial intelligence to enhance the details of games. This technology bears resemblance to AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) and Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Resolution (DLSS).
These features are applicable in various compatible games and are also categorized as AI super-resolution techniques. However, Microsoft’s technology is expected to diverge from utilizing the onboard components of the GPU for Auto SR.
Computers equipped with an integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU), such as Intel’s Core Ultra, are expected to utilize this component for running the AI super-resolution feature. Additionally, certain desktop processors, like AMD’s Ryzen 8000G, incorporate the new NPU.
The dedicated component for accelerating artificial intelligence computing performance is gaining traction in newer chip designs. Alongside this trend in AI computing, we’ve witnessed the introduction of the Copilot AI assistant.
Games lacking FSR/DLSS support could see significant improvements with this feature. It remains uncertain whether PCs without NPU capabilities will also receive the Automatic Super-Resolution feature. The arrival of this feature in the stable version of the Windows 11 24H2 update is expected soon.
