Apple unveiled the next-generation Mac operating system, macOS Sequoia, at WWDC 2024. The latest macOS 15 Sequoia introduces a host of new features and native tools, including Automatic Window Tiling. This new feature helps users arrange open windows into layouts that best suit their needs, eliminating the need for third-party apps like Magnet and Rectangle that were previously used for similar purposes.
Automatic Windows Tiling in macOS Sequoia
macOS Sequoia’s Automatic Windows Tiling feature can be invoked in several ways, including through keyboard shortcuts. Here’s how you can use it:
- Ensure macOS Sequoia is installed on your Mac (currently available in Developer Beta).
- Drag a window to the side, top, bottom edge, or any corner of your screen.
- macOS Sequoia will display a grey frame to suggest a tiled position.
- Release the window, and it will automatically snap into place.
- Use Function + Control + Left/Right/Up/Down arrow to tile windows in various directions.
- Press Function + Control + Shift + Left/Right/Up/Down arrow to rearrange window tiles.
- Press Function + Control + R to return a window tile to its previous size.
- From the top Menu bar, navigate to Window -> Move & Resize to manually resize windows.
- Click on Window -> Move & Resize -> Quarters to arrange windows to accommodate more applications.
- With macOS Sequoia, Apple aims to streamline window management on Mac computers, providing users with intuitive tools directly integrated into the operating system.
- Additionally, you can select a window and hover over the green maximize button in the top-left corner to resize the window. If you’ve signed into your iPad with the same Apple ID, you can also move the window to your iPad using this feature.
This allows you to arrange two app windows side by side or keep multiple apps visible simultaneously on your Mac. After using auto tiling, if you manually move a window, it will revert to its original size.
It’s important to note that some apps are designed with minimum size restrictions, preventing them from being resized beyond a certain point. As a result, tiled windows may extend beyond the screen or overlap each other. To address gaps between windows left by the automatic tiling system, you can navigate to System Settings -> Desktop and Dock, scroll down to the Windows section, and disable the “Tiled windows have margins” option. This adjustment will reduce the space between tiled windows.
As of beta 2, the automatic windows tiling feature is functional, but there are slight delays and issues with displaying windows properly in the quarter layout. However, the feature works correctly when arranging windows side by side.
Certainly! Apple is expected to refine the features, and we anticipate that all functionalities will work smoothly when the stable version of macOS Sequoia launches later this year.
