Indian Filmmakers Spotlight ‘Shot on iPhone 15 Pro Max’ Films at Film Festival

Films have historically been captured using traditional, bulky cameras, a process that is both tedious and time-consuming. However, in 2023, director Vishal Bhardwaj revolutionized filmmaking by creating “Fursat,” a feature film shot entirely on an iPhone 14 Pro. This groundbreaking approach has inspired other filmmakers to explore similar methods.

In a statement regarding this pioneering achievement, Vishal Bhardwaj remarked:

The Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), along with acclaimed directors Rohan Sippy, Vikramaditya Motwane, and Vishal Bhardwaj, will mentor five up-and-coming filmmakers. Saurav Rai, Archana Atul Phadke, Faraz Ali, Saumyananda Sahi, and Prateek Vats will each create short films using iPhones, which will premiere at the 2024 MAMI Select — Filmed on iPhone Program.

The chosen filmmakers will utilize an iPhone 15 Pro Max to push the boundaries of traditional filmmaking. Additionally, they will receive a MacBook Pro featuring the M3 Max Chip, offering exceptional performance and battery life. This setup will enable them to edit their footage even in the most remote locations. Vikramaditya Motwane commented on this groundbreaking project, saying:

“Now, with the iPhone, you can tell any story that’s within you using the device you carry with you all day. The iPhone is a true blessing for filmmakers, offering everyone the opportunity to capture remarkable moments.”

When discussing this project, Anupama Chopra, the director of the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image, highlighted her and the academy’s dedication to fostering an ecosystem that fosters innovation and provides students with significant opportunities. She expressed:

“We strive to build an ecosystem that empowers emerging filmmakers by providing opportunities to create new work and present it to a wider audience. MAMI Select — Filmed on iPhone is a significant step in that direction. We are eager for the world to experience these stories, captured with the filmmaking capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and edited using the powerful MacBook Pro with M3.”

It’s refreshing to witness a shift away from traditional filming techniques towards utilizing smartphones and other devices for filmmaking. This approach could potentially revolutionize the industry. We eagerly await the impact this festival will have on filmmaking as a whole.
