In the Starfield universe, Earth has undergone a dramatic transformation. Instead of the familiar blue and green planet we know, Earth is now depicted as a barren wasteland covered in vast deserts and sand dunes, devoid of any signs of life. This significant change in Earth’s appearance suggests a cataclysmic event or series of events that have radically altered the planet’s environment and ecosystem. The exact details of what caused this transformation remain a mystery, and players of the game will likely explore and uncover more about Earth’s fate as they progress through the Starfield storyline.
What Is the Fate of Earth in Starfield?
In the world of Starfield, the game is set approximately twenty years after the conclusion of the first colony war, placing it around the year 2310. During this time, humanity has expanded its presence beyond Earth, establishing two prominent factions: The FreeStar Collective and The United Colonies.
Regrettably, Earth itself has undergone a profound transformation. Once a vibrant blue planet, it has lost its significance to the current governing bodies and the burgeoning settlements. Instead, Earth now appears as a desolate sphere covered in brown dust. In the course of the “The Old Neighbourhood” mission, Sarah Morgan alludes to the absence of life on Earth, attributing it to the collapse of its atmosphere.
If you choose to enlist in the UC Vanguard at MAST, you can gain access to a comprehensive account of Earth’s fate and the reasons behind its desolation in Starfield. In the year 2150, Earth’s governing authorities came to a grim realization: the planet’s magnetosphere was on a course to collapse within fifty years. This ominous development meant that by 2200, Earth would become uninhabitable, spelling doom for civilization as we knew it.
In response to this impending catastrophe, Earth’s governments united in 2159, forming the United Colonies and heralding a new era of interplanetary exploration and colonization. By 2160, the UC had established their central hub in Jemison, leaving behind Earth and the remnants of human civilization. During this time frame, Earth’s magnetosphere deteriorated, leading to the demise of its flora and fauna, rendering it a hostile and uninhabited world.
With little of value left on Earth, aside from relics of the old civilization, interest in our Sol system and Earth waned, ultimately resulting in the planet’s abandonment.
Locating and Exploring Earth in Starfield
If you’re uncertain about Earth’s location within the Star System, we’ve got you covered. It’s a straightforward process, much like in real life, where Earth resides within our star system.
- Open your planet map and navigate to the Starmap section. Look for the star system named Sol; this is where you’ll find Earth.
- Plot a course for Sol and execute a grav jump. You can learn how to grav jump in Starfield by referring to our dedicated article.
- Once you’re within the Sol system, locate Earth and choose any landmark you’d like to land at.
And just like that, you’ll find yourself on Earth, the ancient home of our civilization. Unfortunately, in the timeline of Starfield, Earth has long been abandoned by humanity, who have since settled on other planets, leaving Earth behind. If you undertake the mission “The Old Neighbourhood,” it will take you to the Sol system, and after completing it, you can take a detour to visit Earth and explore its desolate landscapes.
