The Pokémon universe is incredibly vast, featuring creatures inspired by real-world animals, including many cat-like Pokémon. Spanning over nine generations of games, the Pokémon series offers a diverse array of feline-inspired creatures. If you’re a fan looking to learn about all the cat Pokémon in the franchise, continue reading as we explore each one from the series’ inception to the present day.
All Cat Pokémon in Order
The series features cat Pokémon spread across nine generations of games. Here are all the cat Pokémon listed in order by generation:
Generation 1 (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow)
Generation 1 games featured only two feline Pokémon – Meowth and Persian. Interestingly, both Pokémon have appeared as part of Team Rocket in the anime. Some might argue for the inclusion of Growlithe on this list, as it is inspired by a tiger, which is a cat sub-species.
Generation 2 (Gold, Silver, Crystal)
In the second generation of games, we included Eevee. This normal-type Pokémon resembles a feline in many ways. Although some may debate this choice, Eevee’s evolutions are directly inspired by cats.
Generation 3 (Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen)
All cat Pokémon in Generation 3 present an interesting mix. While Zangoose is a bipedal blend of a mongoose and a cat, the other two are directly inspired by cats. I love Delcatty because of how cute it looks.
Generation 4 (Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver)
In the Pokémon Generation 4 games, Shinx and its evolved forms, Luxio and Luxray, are directly inspired by cats. Glameow is another Pokémon in this generation that closely resembles a real-life cat.
Generation 5 (Black and White)
In the Generation 5 Pokémon games, there are only two monsters resembling real-life felines. Purrloin looks very similar to a cat, while Liepard, as its name suggests, resembles a leopard, a sub-species of cats.
Generation 6 (X and Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire)
Generation 5 mirrors Generation 4 with a similar lineup of cat Pokémon.
Generation 7 (Sun, Moon, Ultra Moon, Ultra Sun, Let’s Go Pikachu!, and Let’s Go Eevee!)
In the seventh generation of Pokémon games, there are several Pokémon that resemble cats, with two of them being Alolan forms of existing Pokémon. Additionally, this generation introduces one of the famous Fire-type Pokémon in the game.
Generation 8 (Sword, Brilliant Diamond, Shield, Shining Pearl, Legends: Arceus)
Generation 9 (Scarlet, Violet)
There are a total of 36 Cat Pokémon across all nine generations of Pokémon games, including the original Red, Blue, and Green games as well as the latest Scarlet and Violet editions. Fans of the old Pokémon anime will recognize iconic characters like Team Rocket’s talking cat Meowth and Giovanni’s pet cat Persian, both of which have left a lasting impression.
Another notable Cat Pokémon is Incineroar, a Fire-type from Pokémon Sun and Moon, who has gained popularity and even appeared in the famous game Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
