Mastering the Art of Grav Jumping in Starfield

Exploring the vast and intricate universe of Starfield, Bethesda has incorporated various means of travel within the game. Alongside the conventional fast travel options, the Grav Jump emerges as a prominent feature, offering players an efficient way to navigate planets and solar systems. With the game’s expansive scope, spanning over 1,000 planets, this feature was highlighted by developers to ensure seamless exploration. However, for newcomers, grasping the technique of grav jumping can prove perplexing. This article provides a comprehensive, step-by-step guide on how to execute a successful grav jump in Starfield.

Although the game’s interface may initially appear daunting due to its numerous elements, executing a grav jump in Starfield is surprisingly straightforward, aligning with Bethesda’s tradition of introducing accessible game mechanics. Starfield provides a brief tutorial on performing a grav jump, mainly for mission purposes, which might not fully clarify the process on the first attempt. Therefore, let’s delve into the two methods for executing a grav jump in Starfield.

1. Initiating a Grav Jump to a Mission Star System

Starfield requires you to perform grav jumps to different star systems as part of your missions. Your first destination is Jemison, the home of New Atlantis, situated within the Alpha Centauri system. To execute a grav jump for mission progression, adhere to these steps:

  • Launch into the Frontier, the ship provided to you by Barrett.
  • Once you’re in orbit, access the star system map by pressing the “M” key on your keyboard. This action will display the map.

  • Press the “Tab” key twice to zoom out to the star system map. From here, choose the star system you intend to jump to by clicking on it.

  • Once you have chosen the star system, hold down the “X” key to initiate the Grav Jump in Starfield.

  • While at the pilot’s seat, allocate power to the Grav Jump drive by reducing power from other systems. Use the arrow keys (located at the bottom left) to navigate to the power allocation controls, and then reassign power to the Grav Jump system.

By following these steps, you’ll initiate a Grav Jump, allowing you to reach a new star system in Starfield. From there, you can freely choose to land on any of the planets within that star system.

2. Initiating a Grav Jump to a Random Star System

In Starfield, you have the freedom to explore star systems at your leisure, fitting for a member of the Constellation, a collective of explorers. However, it’s important to note that you can’t jump directly to an uncharted star system. You must first travel to the nearest known star system, and from there, you can reach your desired star system. Once you’ve reached the nearest system, the process for initiating a Grav Jump is the same as described above.

Additionally, it’s essential to consider fuel consumption when planning your journeys in Starfield. To facilitate continuous route charting, you should invest in upgrading your fuel tank through a ship merchant. This upgrade allows you to travel directly to uncharted star systems without needing to detour through nearby ones. Keep in mind that fuel plays a crucial role in determining the length of your journey. However, you won’t need to concern yourself with refueling, as the game handles this automatically when entering a star system.
