As a dedicated gamer with a passion for single-player experiences, I’ve delved into thousands of video games across various genres. In the past, difficulty in gaming was often associated with multiplayer titles. However, that landscape has changed drastically. Now, challenging gameplay can be found in both single-player and multiplayer games alike. Whether you’re intrigued by extreme challenges or prefer to avoid them, the world of gaming offers a plethora of tough experiences. Recently, I took it upon myself to compile a list ranking the hardest video games of all time. If you’re curious, let’s dive into it together.
10. Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy
- Release Date: 6 December 2017
- Developer(s): Bennett Foddy
- Platform(s): Android, iOS, Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Mac operating systems
Let’s start this list with a game that pushed me to the brink of frustration to the point of breaking my mouse. “Getting Over It,” released in 2017, appears deceptively simple at first glance. It’s a climbing game with a twist: you control a man inside a cauldron using your mouse, attempting to ascend to the top. Sounds straightforward, right? Wrong.
The controls are among the most awkward I’ve encountered, and the incessant and irritating narration added insult to injury. Making a single misstep can send you tumbling back to the beginning. And that relentless voice? It never ceases its taunts. Despite hours of climbing, I never managed to finish it. After finally uninstalling the game, I was convinced it deserved a place on this list.
“Getting Over It” has even spawned similar titles, such as “Only Up,” which intentionally exacerbates players’ suffering with its deliberately buggy and frustrating level design. If you’re keen on torturing yourself, you could give it a try. However, if you’re seeking a fair yet challenging gaming experience, I recommend sticking to “Getting Over It.”

The Souls-like genre continues to evolve, with new challenges added regularly. This trend continued with the release of Elden Ring in 2022. Setting itself apart from its genre counterparts, Elden Ring greets players with an unabashedly brutal level of difficulty.
Right from the outset, players are confronted with the harsh reality of the game’s challenges, especially evident in the initial boss fights. These bosses are significantly more powerful than your character, presenting a formidable obstacle at any stage of the game. However, Elden Ring’s open-world design provides players with a unique opportunity to navigate these challenges at their own pace, offering a departure from the rush to finish battles typically associated with the genre.
With the impending release of Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, one can only anticipate that the difficulty position may escalate indeed further. Only time will reveal the extent of the challenge that awaits in this eagerly awaited effect.

FromSoftwareInc. is famed for its innovative game design and partiality for casting grueling gests . still, with the creation of Sekiro murk Die doubly, the inventors may have pushed the boundaries of difficulty a bit too far. Indeed seasoned stagers of FromSoftware’s former titles, similar as Dark Souls, set up themselves scuffling with the steep challenge presented by this masterpiece.
A pivotal aspect of Sekiro is learning the art of timing your counters. Success frequently hinges on your capability to turn effectively. Regrettably, numerous players, myself included, plodded to grasp this handyperson and eventually succumbed to frustration, leading to rage- quitting the game.

2. Dark Souls
- Release Date: 4 October 2011
- Developer(s): FromSoftware Inc., QLOC, Virtuos
- Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360
When agitating FromSoftwareInc., it’s insolvable to overlook the vital part played by Dark Souls in shaping the grueling Souls- like kidney. Unlike its smoother successors in Dark Souls 2 and 3, the original Dark Souls delivered a deliberate and regular approach to combat. Each hassle erected up sluggishly, icing that players could not escape without slipping blood or essence.
In comparison to its counterparts like Demon’s Souls, Bloodborne, or Elden Ring, Dark Souls Original offered little room for adaption. While Elden Ring permits players to liberate from battles and Bloodborne emphasizes mobility, Dark Souls remained a true soul- crushing crucible, immersing players in its enduring world with unyielding difficulty.

1. Super Meat Boy

- Platform(s): Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Nintendo Switch
In the realm of grueling side- scrolling platformers, Super MarioBros. 2 set a high bar. still, Team Meat took up the challenge and elevated the kidney to new heights with Super Meat Boy, released in 2010. Featuring unequaled position design, this game was designed to push players to the point of frustration, especially with its grim handicap courses.
Super Meat Boy offered snappy and lightning-fast gameplay, demanding players to parade both speed and perfection contemporaneously. In my view, no other game has come as close to delivering the position of difficulty that Super Meat Boy presents. One redeeming quality of the game was its rapid-fire respawn system, icing that no matter how numerous times you met your demise, you were snappily thrown back into the action.
