Honkai Star Rail’s 2.1 update is just around the corner, promising to shed light on some of the mysteries from the 2.0 trailblazing missions. The most intriguing mysteries revolve around Firefly, her death, and Sam the Stellaron Hunter. While the update is imminent, I couldn’t resist adding one more wild theory to the mix, which is just as wild as the Dr. Ratio impersonating as Aventurine theory.
Firefly and Sam are actually the same person. Not surprising, right? This rumor has been circulating in the Honkai Star Rail community for a while, and I even discussed it in a segment on Firefly’s death. However, I’ve uncovered an additional piece of the puzzle that might finally debunk this theory. My wild theory suggests that Firefly and Sam are inspired by the famous Nintendo character Samus Aran from the Metroid game series.
Did the Metroid Game Series Inspire This?
Following the completion of the Honkai Star Rail 2.0 trailblazing missions, my focus shifted to unraveling the mysteries, particularly surrounding Firefly’s demise and her relationship with Sam. Sam’s character is particularly intriguing, notably because of their name. Unlike the distinctive names of other Stellaron Hunters we’ve encountered, such as Kafka, Blade, or Silver Wolf, “Sam” seems rather ordinary and lacks the same level of uniqueness.
Reflecting on my memories, I recalled a beloved classic Nintendo game from my childhood, the Metroid series (specifically, Super Metroid on the SNES). In Metroid, players assume the role of Samus Aran, a galactic protector who battles space pirates and other threats while safeguarding the powerful parasite known as Metroid from misuse. Much like Sam from Honkai Star Rail, Samus Aran wears a distinctive power suit, concealing her true identity as a female character beneath the armor.
Similarities Between Firefly, Sam, and Samus Aran
Firefly and Samus Aran share notable similarities, evident in the revelations from the Honkai Star Rail 2.0 Trailblazing missions and Firefly’s backstory. Here are some key connections between Firefly, Sam, and Samus Aran.
Their Homeland was Destroyed
In a poignant exchange between Firefly and the Trailblazer at her secret hideout, Firefly disclosed that her homeland had been devastated, possibly by either the Legion or the Swarm. This mirrors the tragic fate of Samus Aran’s homeland, the K-2L mining colony, which was raided by Space Pirates, leading to its destruction.
Both Associated with Rogue Organizations (Intentions Uncertain?)
Sam is a member of the Stellaron Hunters, a rogue organization pursued by the rest of society. Despite this, the Stellaron Hunters have not been depicted as antagonists in the narrative. On the contrary, they have been instrumental in assisting the Trailblazer in resolving numerous conflicts and challenges.
Likewise, Samus Aran initially served within the Galactic Federation, tasked with tracking down and neutralizing Space Pirates. However, she eventually transitioned into a role more akin to a rogue space adventurer, operating as a Bounty Hunter. Her primary mission remained thwarting the plans of Space Pirates and other malicious factions, particularly in preventing the misuse of the Metroid parasite, which bears resemblance to the Stellaron concept when considering their potential parallels.
Both Are Inflicted with a Sickness
During her heartfelt conversation with the Trailblazer, Firefly revealed that she suffers from a debilitating illness that disconnects her from reality, causing everything to feel dull. If Firefly is indeed Sam, this affliction could potentially explain her remarkable strength as well.
Conversely, Samus Aran was infested with the Metroid parasite, resulting in her becoming the only remaining Metroid in the galaxy. While the parasite differs from Firefly’s illness, it nonetheless enhances her abilities.
Hoyoverse Draws Inspiration from Classic Nintendo Game?
Indeed, Metroid is more than just an old Nintendo game series; it’s the pioneering title that kickstarted the entire Metroidvania gaming genre, alongside Castlevania, with the genre’s name even derived from Metroid.
Samus Aran holds a prominent place as one of the most beloved female gaming characters of all time, earning high praise within the gaming community. Drawing inspiration from her for Firefly and Sam doesn’t seem far-fetched and appears increasingly plausible, especially considering the growing likelihood of Firefly and Sam being one and the same.
What’s your take on my speculative theory? Do you believe Firefly and Sam are indeed one and the same? And if so, do you think her character draws inspiration from Samus Aran? Let us know your opinions on the above theory in the comment box underneath.
