“Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is just around the corner, and it’s time to start preparing! Based on rumors and FromSoftware’s history, we can expect this DLC to be incredibly challenging. Luckily, there are plenty of items, spells, incantations, talismans, and weapons in the base game that can be very useful for tackling the DLC. To make things easier, we’ve compiled a list of the best items you should have before diving into Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Keep reading to find out what you need!
1. Lantern
The Lantern is often underestimated but is incredibly useful in Elden Ring. It proved invaluable during the base game, especially when exploring dark dungeons and locations. It provides light without taking up a primary equipment slot, making it a great passive aid.
You can buy the Lantern from the Isolated Merchant located west of the Weeping Peninsula. Nearby, you’ll find a Grace Site named “Isolated Merchant Sight of Grace.” Make sure to grab this essential item before the Erdtree expansion launches!
2. Crepus’s Vial Talisman
Crepus’s Vial might not be well-known, but it’s one of the best talismans in Elden Ring. This talisman silences all movements made by the wearer, making it ideal for stealth and avoiding enemy encounters. I frequently used it in the base game to evade detection in crowded enemy zones while searching for items.
Although it doesn’t provide invisibility like the Unseen Form spell, it significantly aids in avoiding enemies. You can obtain Crepus’s Vial by completing the second assassination mission from Tanith in the Volcanic Manor.
3. Unseen Form
The Unseen Form is a Sorcery Spell in Elden Ring that grants invisibility, making it perfect for stealth situations. This spell is highly effective for avoiding unnecessary confrontations while exploring.
Combining this spell with Crepus’s Vial creates the ultimate stealth setup in Elden Ring. You can acquire this spell in Altus Plateau after solving the Mirage Rise puzzle.
4. Green Turtle Talisman
The Green Turtle Talisman is essential for melee builds in Elden Ring. It boosts stamina recovery speed, which is crucial for heavy weapon and armor builds. Given the aggressive nature of enemies and bosses in the Elden Ring DLC preview, maintaining stamina while rolling is vital to avoid defeat.
You can find the Green Turtle Talisman in Summonwater Village, northeast of Limgrave.
5. Mimic Tear Ashes
The Mimic Tear is arguably the best spirit summon in Elden Ring, and it’s expected to be just as effective in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. This summon mimics the player’s build, including weapons and talismans, allowing you to double the effectiveness of your build against enemies.
The Mimic Tear is particularly beneficial for builds focused on bleed and poise-breaking. You can find this spirit summon at Night’s Sacred Ground in Nokron, the Eternal City.
6. Bloodhound Step
Bloodhound Step is an Ash of War that enables quick dodging of enemy attacks. While it has been nerfed, it remains valuable for players who find dodging challenging.
As a wielder of double-colossal swords in Elden Ring, I still use Bloodhound Step on my Greatsword to avoid enemy strikes during attack animations. You can obtain this Ash of War by defeating the Night’s Cavalry boss near the Great Bridge in Caelid.
7. Larval Tear
Larval Tears are rare items in Elden Ring that allow players to respec their stats by interacting with Rennala in the Grand Library of Raya Lucaria. There are 18 Larval Tears available in the base game, and it’s wise to keep a few in reserve for the DLC.
With the addition of over 100 new weapons and multiple weapon types in the Realm of Shadows, you might frequently need to adjust your build to experiment with new equipment.
8. Crafting Kit
Finally, the Crafting Kit is essential. Elden Ring introduced crafting, a mechanic absent in previous Soulsborne games, and it’s often underused by players. However, crafting can provide useful items that help in challenging encounters.
The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will also introduce new recipes, so having the Crafting Kit will be crucial. You can buy the Crafting Kit from Kale the Merchant at the Church of Elleh in Limgrave. It’s definitely one of the top items to have before starting the DLC.
These are the key items you should consider acquiring before diving into Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. Have any other suggestions? Share them in the comments below!
