The individual responsible for the $68 million cryptocurrency theft has expressed intent to return the assets using the Telegram messaging platform. Crypto investigator ZachXBT shared that the suspected hacker behind the $68 million theft has opted to return the funds to the victim.
In a communication within the Etherscan.io chat, the perpetrator requested the victim’s Telegram contact to facilitate the return of 51 Ethereum (ETH).
As of now, there has been no response from the victim to the hacker’s offer. The reason behind the hacker’s decision to return the stolen funds a week after the incident remains unclear.
Earlier this month, an unidentified user lost $68 million in cryptocurrency due to a spam attack and a lapse in attention. The victim inadvertently sent scammers 1,155 Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) tokens, valued at over $68 million, falling prey to a spam attack.
This type of spam attack, also known as a “poisoning or dust attack, involves sending small amounts of cryptocurrency to a target’s wallet from addresses that closely resemble the victim’s regular transfer address.“
Crypto project losses from hacks have notably decreased by 141% in the past month, as reported by CertiK. The total declared amount from crypto hacks amounted to $21 million. Additionally, crypto projects experienced losses of $4.3 million due to exit scams and $129,000 due to flash loan fraud.
Since the start of 2024, crypto projects have collectively lost $449 million. The most substantial attack to date was the hacking of the Orbit Bridge, resulting in victims losing $81.5 million.
