If you’re familiar with Discord, you might know about a feature called Soundboard that allows users to play a short audio clip during voice calls. This feature can lighten the mood of the conversation and add a fun element to the call. Google is introducing a similar feature called Audio Emoji to its Phone app.
Audio Emoji allows users to choose from six pre-selected sound snippets, each corresponding to an emoji icon. These include clap, laughter, party, sad, poop, and drumroll sound effects. When you select one of these options, a sound will play along with an animation that both you and the person on the other end of the call can hear, even if the call is on speakerphone. In this post, we’ll explain how you can enable and use Audio Emoji in the Phone by Google app.
Enabling Audio Emoji in the Phone App
1. Open the Phone app and tap on the three dots icon in the top right corner.
2. Select “Settings” from the drop-down menu.
3. Look for the “Audio Emoji” option within the settings.
4. Toggle the switch to enable Audio Emoji for your device.
Using Audio Emojis During a Phone Call
To use Audio Emojis during a call, simply tap on the Audio Emoji option and select the emoji you want to play. They only work when the call has been answered by the recipient.
You will hear the sound along with accompanying animations that play each time you use it. The person on the other end of the call will also be able to hear it, regardless of whether they have this feature enabled or not. Currently, you cannot add additional emoji effects.
Please note that this feature is currently being rolled out to users who are part of the beta program for the Phone by Google app on the Play Store. Even after updating to the beta version, you may need to connect to a VPN in the USA to access this feature.
While intriguing, I can’t help but wonder why Google decided to add this feature to the phone app. It makes sense for Discord, which is a platform for casual and fun conversations. However, playing a “poop” sound effect during a business call could be embarrassing. It would have been more fitting if the feature were available for Google Meet or Google Messages RCS calls.
