What is Android 15’s Dessert Name? Explained

After an extensive wait, the initial Android 15 Developer Preview was released in February for Google Pixel devices. Subsequently, the brand has been testing its upcoming major OS update through new beta releases. At the Beebom office, we installed it on the Pixel 7 Pro, finally confirming the Android 15 dessert name as “Vanilla Ice Cream”.

Discussions about this codename have circulated on the internet since last year. However, the confirmation on Google’s developer website solidifies it. A screenshot of Android Gradle plugin code has been posted, confirming the Android 15 codename.

Google continues its tradition of dessert-themed names for its latest Android versions. Android 14 was codenamed “Upside Down Cake,” while Android 13 was dubbed “Tiramisu.”

Initially, Google not only used dessert names as codenames but also officially attached them to Android version numbers. For instance, Android 8 was officially named Oreo, followed by Android 9, Pie. However, with Android 10, Google abandoned the dessert-themed naming convention, simply calling it “Q.” Internally, though, Android 10 was referred to as “Quince Tart” by Google. Since then, these Android monikers have solely become internal codenames.

We’re compiling the list of new Android 15 features here so you can explore them all conveniently in one place. What are your thoughts on the new Android 15 dessert name?
