Just a week after the AI Overview rollout in the US, Google has begun testing ads in AI-generated summaries on the search page. According to a Google blog post, “In early testing, we’ve heard that people find the ads appearing above and below the AI-generated overview helpful.” However, it’s unclear where this feedback is coming from, as many users are actually seeking ways to disable the AI Overview in Google Search.
Google’s AI Overviews have not been well received, with users demanding the return of traditional blue links on the search page. The Google search community page is flooded with complaints about AI-generated results. Concerns have been raised about the AI Overview providing incorrect and sometimes dangerous information at the top of search results.
Google has announced that ads will first appear in the US before being rolled out to other regions, clearly labeled as “Sponsored.” In one example, Google shows relevant product ads below the AI Overview results. It remains unclear if Google will integrate ads directly into the responses generated by the AI Overview.
Microsoft is also experimenting with ads in the Copilot app. A user on X shared that Copilot recommended nine software solutions for data analysis, three of which were ads generated as part of the response. Although Microsoft has not officially announced this, the testing appears to be underway. When I attempted to replicate the results, Copilot did not display any ads.
It appears that ads will slowly start being a part of the AI-experience on the internet. What are your thoughts on Google’s and Microsoft’s decision on integrating ads in search results? Tell us in the comments below.
