Spotify is introducing a new feature that allows Premium users to watch full music videos directly within the app, similar to YouTube Music’s functionality. While Spotify currently shows a brief looping clip of the song, this update will enable users to enjoy the entire music video. This enhancement promises to enhance the overall music streaming experience on Spotify.
The company has announced that this new feature will be in Beta and accessible exclusively to Premium users initially. The feature will debut with a restricted catalog featuring artists like Ed Sheeran, Doja Cat, Ice Spice, Aluna, and Asake. Additional artists will be included later, with the goal of expanding the feature to encompass thousands of songs.
To use this feature, users can activate the “Switch to Video” option in the available music tracks, which will start playing the video from the beginning. Users can also opt to watch the video in full screen by rotating their phones to landscape orientation.
To return to the regular music interface, users can disable music videos using the “Switch to Audio” option.
Initially, this feature will have a limited release in 11 regions, including the UK, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Brazil, Colombia, Philippines, Indonesia, and Kenya. More regions are expected to be added as the catalog of music videos expands.
According to Sten Garmark, Spotify’s Global Head of Consumer Experience, these regions were chosen “based on criteria such as market size and the availability of local content support”. As the feature exits beta, more regions will be included.
The music videos will be accessible on Android, iOS, desktop, and web versions of Spotify. The beta rollout begins today and is exclusively available to Premium subscribers. This feature has been highly requested since the launch of YouTube Music, and I’m thrilled to see it become a reality. What do you think of this new music video feature?
