During Intel’s Q4 2023 earnings call, CEO Pat Gelsinger provided insights into the exciting developments in the company’s upcoming processor generations, including Panther Lake, Lunar Lake, and Arrow Lake.
Intel recently introduced the Meteor Lake architecture in its latest Core Ultra processors for laptops, showcasing advancements such as AI capabilities facilitated by the onboard NPU. Looking ahead to 2024, Intel is expected to launch the Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake processor architectures. Furthermore, in 2025, Intel plans to unveil the Panther Lake architecture.
This roadmap was initially disclosed during the Innovation 2023 event. In the recent Q4 2024 earnings call, Pat Gelsinger’s remarks, as reported by Seeking Alpha, shed further light on the current and future processor generations:
“The Core Ultra platform currently leads in AI performance, and our upcoming next-generation platforms, Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake, will triple this performance when launched later this year. In 2025, Panther Lake will further increase AI performance by an additional 2x.” – Pat Gelsinger, CEO of Intel
Pat Gelsinger’s statement encapsulates significant developments in a single sentence. According to him, the upcoming Lunar Lake and Arrow Lake architectures will boast triple the AI performance of current processors. Moreover, in 2025, Panther Lake is expected to double AI performance once again. It’s important to note that PCs featuring these latest processor architectures may not be widely available immediately after Intel announces them.
If we do the math, next year could see processors from Intel offering six times the AI performance of current Core Ultra processors. This underscores Intel’s dedication to enhancing the Neural Computing Unit (NPU) and aligns with the tech industry’s ongoing focus on advancing artificial intelligence capabilities.
Apart From AI, We’re Hoping For More
While Intel’s hybrid performance architecture has undoubtedly seen enhancements with Core Ultra, particularly with the introduction of the “Low Power E-Core” alongside P-cores and E-cores, there’s still room for improvement. These advancements have notably extended the battery life of contemporary laptops and showcased robust Arc graphics, making them suitable for gaming. Additionally, the integration of these latest chips into portable gaming handhelds is a significant development.
However, there’s a lingering expectation for substantial performance upgrades in the CPU realm. Looking ahead to Intel’s upcoming Lunar Lake, Arrow Lake, and Panther Lake processors, there’s a desire to witness significant enhancements across all facets of the processor. While AI capabilities remain crucial, there’s a specific desire for advancements that surpass AMD’s Ryzen 9 7945HX3D in CPU-intensive gaming benchmarks.
When discussing “AI performance,” Intel’s focus should extend to enhancing performance across all AI engines, including the GPU, NPU, and CPU. Considering the relative novelty of the NPU, significant advancements in this area are anticipated.
Setting aside AI improvements for future processors, insights from Intel’s Q4 2023 earnings call shed light on the company’s plans for Xeon processors. The CEO indicated that the launch of Sierra Forest is anticipated in the first half of ’24, followed closely by Granite Rapids.
Recent observations of next-generation Xeon processors in a Linux patch align with Intel’s CEO statement, suggesting that the company is progressing as planned with the development of Sierra Forest Xeon processors.
