OpenAI Relents: Keep Chats, Disable Training

OpenAI now allows disabling ChatGPT model training, preserving chat history. We unveiled this opt-out option hidden in OpenAI’s docs, which the company hasn’t actively promoted. Today, OpenAI introduces a data control feature for adjusting ChatGPT privacy settings conveniently.

In ChatGPT’s Settings, navigate to Data controls and toggle off “Improve the model for everyone.” This feature is accessible to both free and paid ChatGPT Plus users. Previously, OpenAI bundled chat history and model training under a single toggle. Disabling model training meant losing chat history, which was counter-intuitive.

Chat history is a fundamental and crucial feature that should remain separate from model training. OpenAI’s previous approach could be seen as penalizing users for prioritizing privacy, as it effectively removed a significant feature if one opted out of model training.

The use of private conversations to enhance and train AI models is often unknown to many users. Both OpenAI and Google rely on human reviewers to annotate and process conversations for this purpose. Consequently, AI companies advise users against sharing personal information when chatting with AI chatbots.

Since ChatGPT has model training enabled by default, I highly advise users to turn it off. If you prefer a private conversation with ChatGPT, opt for Temporary chat from the drop-down menu. These chats won’t be saved in your history.
