Google Updates Its Sign-in Page After 6 Years, and It’s Underwhelming

Google is rolling out visual changes to its sign-in and sign-up pages after nearly six years. The search giant states that the updated appearance adheres to Google’s Material Design 3 (also known as Material You) philosophy, aiming for a more modern look. The newly-designed Google sign-in page will gradually appear over the next two weeks, with the new interface visible across the web and [on] mobile devices.

The Transformation of Google’s Sigsn-in Page

In 2018, Google last refreshed the login page to align with Material Design principles. Changes included centering the text field, outlining the sign-in experience, and tweaking the Google logo. Prior to that, the last major overhaul occurred in 2015, introducing users to a new login flow.

How Google’s sign-in page has evolved over the years

Initially, you input your username, followed by your password on the subsequent screen. This login flow remains unchanged to this day, and the updated interface maintains the same sign-in process. It’s important to note that Google has not altered any functionality with this visual update, so all familiar buttons and menus will remain accessible.

Despite not encountering the new Google login page design in our testing, I’ve already formed some initial impressions. Google has been teasing a “more modern look and feel” for the past couple of weeks, generating high anticipation. However, the new design appears to be only a minor refresh, incorporating elements of Material Design 3 without significant changes. Overall, it’s underwhelming and lacks the wow factor.

Google has stated that the rollout commenced on February 21 and is expected to conclude by March 4, 2024. Over the next few days, all users, whether with personal Google accounts or Google Workspace accounts, will encounter the updated interface. If you encounter Google’s new sign-in page, there’s no need to worry.

However, remain vigilant against phishing attacks and refrain from entering your Google username and password on any webpage resembling Google’s new sign-in page. What are your thoughts on the new visual change? Share your opinions in the comment section below.
