At Build 2024, Microsoft and Qualcomm unveiled a new website where users can check the compatibility of their favorite Windows games with the new Copilot+ PCs, which are powered by ARM-based Snapdragon X series processors. This website, worksonwoa.com, is maintained by Linaro, an open-source organization dedicated to the ARM ecosystem, with contributions from both Microsoft and Qualcomm.
Additionally, users can contribute to the “Works on Windows on Arm” project by testing games on the WoA (Windows on ARM) platform. Gaming Compatibility is Classified into Four Categories.
- Perfect: Windows games run at 60+ FPS at 1080p resolution. (Around 700+ games)
- Playable: Windows games run at 30+ FPS at 1080p resolution. (Around 1400+ games)
- Runs: Windows games run, but may have some issues. (Around 200+ games)
- Unplayable: Windows games don’t run currently. (Around 19 games)
According to Microsoft, over 1200 Windows games are currently playable on ARM-based Copilot+ PCs, offering a smooth 30FPS experience at 1080p resolution. Additionally, users can explore gaming titles that support Automatic Super Resolution, an AI feature exclusive to Windows 11 24H2, which upscales the frame rate while preserving detailed visuals. It’s worth noting that this feature is currently available only on Snapdragon X series PCs.
To check the compatibility status of my favorite gaming titles, I visited the website and searched for Apex Legends, Elden Ring, and Rainbow Six Siege. Unfortunately, these games weren’t found in the repository. However, when I searched for Valorant, the website indicated that the game is currently unplayable on Snapdragon X Elite and Plus processors, last tested in November 2023.
Continuing my search, I looked for Red Dead Redemption 2, which was listed as “Playable”, while Forza Horizon 3 runs with some glitches, and God of War runs smoothly out of the box. During the event, Microsoft showcased that Baldur’s Gate 3 and Borderlands run at 30 FPS with Auto SR enabled. Overall, it seems there’s still progress to be made before intensive gaming titles are fully playable on ARM-based Adreno GPU.
I discovered a list of games that are currently unplayable on Snapdragon X series processors, including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Diablo Immortal, Fortnite, Half Life, League of Legends, PUBG Battlegrounds, Microsoft Solitaire Collection, Roblox, NBA 2K24, and more.
Microsoft has developed a compatibility layer called Prism, akin to Apple’s Rosetta 2, enabling x86 apps and games to run seamlessly on ARM-based PCs. Previously, a Qualcomm engineer mentioned that Windows games will seamlessly function on Snapdragon X Elite.
However, games relying on anti-cheat techniques might encounter issues on new-gen AI PCs. While Microsoft mentioned at the event that the BattlEye anti-cheat system now supports ARM, users may need to wait for full implementation.
