Apple’s iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia introduce impressive features and quality-of-life enhancements. Among the many Apple Intelligence updates, the recent iOS 18.2 update added Genmoji to iPhones. If you’re curious about what Genmoji is and how to create one on your iPhone, we’ve got you covered.
What Is Genmoji on iPhone?
Genmoji (Generative + Emoji) is an Apple Intelligence feature that elevates emojis to a new level. It allows you to create custom emojis for any occasion using Apple Intelligence. You can generate unique Genmojis on your iPhone by typing a simple description, such as “t-rex wearing a tutu on a surfboard” or “smiley relaxing with cucumbers.”
As you provide the description, a new Genmoji will appear along with additional options. You can also use photos to create Genmojis of friends and family. Want to turn your mom into a superhero? Now you can.
This new AI feature on the iPhone allows users to express their feelings in a more personalized way. Similar to regular emojis, you can add Genmojis to messages, share them as stickers, or use them as Tapback reactions in the Messages app.
Prerequisites for Creating Custom Emojis on iPhone
Before creating Genmojis on your iPhone, keep these points in mind:
- Genmojis can only be created on Apple Intelligence-supported devices.
- You can send Genmojis to non-Apple Intelligence-supported or older iPhones, and recipients will be able to view them without issues.
- If someone sends you a Genmoji on a non-Apple Intelligence-supported device, you can save it and use it in your chat.
- Genmojis can be used in third-party apps like WhatsApp, Snapchat, Instagram, and more.
How to Create Genmoji or Custom Emojis on iPhone in iOS 18.2
With iOS 18.2, Apple has introduced the Genmoji feature alongside other AI tools like Image Playground and ChatGPT integration with Siri.
If you’re excited about Genmoji, here’s how to create one on your iPhone, assuming you have an Apple Intelligence-supported device:
- Open the Messages app and select a chat.
- Tap the Emoji button on the keyboard, then tap the glowing emoji icon in the top right corner.
- This will open the Genmoji splash screen if it’s your first time using it.
- Enter a prompt to create a Genmoji on your iPhone.
For example, you might create a Genmoji of a cat playing guitar. The Genmoji feature will generate multiple variations for you to choose from. Swipe left to view more options. Once you find the Genmoji you want to use, tap the Add button to insert it into the chat. You can also long-press the Genmoji to copy, share, or save it as a sticker.
How to Create a Custom Emoji of a Person or Friend on iPhone
You can create Genmojis not only by typing prompts but also by turning your friends into Genmojis. Here’s how to create a Genmoji of a person on your iPhone:
- Open the Messages app, select a chat, tap the Emoji button on the keyboard, and then tap the Genmoji button in the top right corner.
- In the prompt box, type the contact name of the person you want to create a Genmoji for. If the contact doesn’t appear, type “Person” or “People.”
- Tap Choose a Person to see a list curated from your Photos app.
Select a person to view a splash screen with various Genmoji options. Swipe left until you find a suitable Genmoji or tap “Choose Other Photo…” to select a different image. This person will be your starting point for creating the Genmoji. Type in the prompt to generate the Genmoji, and once done, tap the Add button.
Genmoji Release Date
Apple launched Genmoji with iOS 18.2, released on December 11, 2024.
While the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and newer models support iOS 18, not all are compatible with Apple Intelligence features. To use the Genmoji feature, you need an iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, any iPhone 16 model, an A17 Pro or M-series iPad, or an M-series Mac.
