YouTube Testing New Feature: Hum to Identify Songs and More

Get ready for a game-changing feature on YouTube that’s currently in testing phase. The video-streaming giant is exploring a novel way to enhance its search capabilities, allowing users to identify songs even if they don’t know the title. If you’ve ever been in the situation where a catchy tune is playing in the background but you can’t remember its name, YouTube’s got your back.

The New YouTube Experiment

According to YouTube’s support page, they’re experimenting with a feature that lets you find a song by humming it. Think of it as your personal musical detective. If you hear a song playing and want to figure out what it is, or if you can’t get a tune out of your head and need to know its name, this feature aims to help.

To make this happen, you’ll simply need to tap the microphone icon next to the search bar. You can either record the song or hum it for about 3 seconds, and YouTube’s voice search will work its magic to identify the song. Once identified, you’ll be presented with the official song content along with relevant user videos or Shorts right within the YouTube app.

Testing and Availability

As of now, this feature is undergoing testing with a limited group of Android users across the globe. There’s no official word on when it will roll out for everyone, including iOS users. Additionally, the effectiveness of the feature remains to be seen, will YouTube accurately pick up your humming or the song itself to provide accurate results?

YouTube’s Other Experiments

YouTube is actively experimenting with other features as well. One of these is the Channel shelf, which gathers multiple uploads from a single creator in one convenient location. This move aims to simplify content discovery for viewers and improve the experience for creators. Not too long ago, the platform was also testing AI-generated video summaries on watch and search pages. These summaries help you decide if a video is worth watching or not.

With various experiments underway, it’s an exciting time for YouTube and its users. If you’re lucky enough to be part of the Android app test, give it a try and let us know how it works for you. Remember, innovation is always a work in progress!
