Strange Glitch Causes Twitter to Lose Pre-2014 Tweets

If you’ve been following Twitter’s rollercoaster ride, you’re well aware of the whirlwind of changes sweeping through the platform, both inside and out. From giving the site a makeover to raising eyebrows with its unblocking feature, the Elon Musk-helmed platform has consistently been in the news. And now, in an unexpected twist, it seems that the microblogging giant has waved goodbye to posts made before 2014. Let’s deep dive into the details of this peculiar incident.

The Erasure of Pre-2014 Tweets

Brazilian vtuber Danilo Takagi first brought this issue to light by posting about it on Twitter, now rebranded as “X.” According to him, posts he had made before 2014 suddenly vanished from his X account. Technologist Tom Coates backed up this claim with a tweet of his own, drawing attention to the glitch. Before long, more users started noticing their older posts disappearing, turning this hiccup into a trending topic.

Here’s the twist: Tweets from before 2014 that included images or links shortened using Twitter’s in-house URL shortener were the ones that mysteriously vanished. Oddly enough, videos posted prior to 2014 survived unscathed. However, any embedded YouTube links from that era were transformed into plain text, showing the unworkable t.co URL.

To add some extra weirdness to the mix, the glitch managed to obliterate the most-retweeted tweet ever on X – a record held by Ellen DeGeneres, who hosted the Oscars in 2014. This tweet had amassed a staggering 2 million shares. Additionally, a significant post from Barack Obama, showing him embracing the First Lady after his 2012 re-election, also went missing. But, in a bit of good news, these vanished posts made a return shortly after their mysterious disappearance.

Curiously, neither Elon Musk nor the current X CEO, Linda Yaccarino, have commented publicly on this issue as of now. If you’re among the folks whose posts have vanished, the best course of action might be to give the restoration process some time. In the meantime, since this story is unfolding, share your thoughts in the comments below. And if you’re one of the unlucky users hit by this glitch, feel free to share your experience.
