Following Google’s announcement of providing seven years of Android OS updates for Pixel 8 series devices, there has been a notable shift in how OEMs approach Android updates. In a similar move, Samsung has now joined this initiative, extending seven years of Android OS updates to Galaxy S24 devices. Commencing with the Galaxy S24 series, Samsung is committed to delivering long-term support for Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra.
Notably, Samsung, which previously offered 4 years of OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates to S- and A-series smartphones, has aligned itself with the extended support model introduced by Google for the Pixel 8 series in 2023.
In a reaffirmation of commitment, Samsung has once again aligned with Google’s extended support model, declaring that the South Korean giant will provide long-term updates, beginning with the Galaxy S24 lineup, spanning up to seven years. The official blog post emphasizes this commitment, stating,
“The newest flagship upholds Samsung’s dedication to expanding the product lifecycle, providing seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. This commitment aims to ensure users can consistently enjoy the optimized performance of their Galaxy devices for an extended period.”
The Galaxy S24 lineup debuts with OneUI 6.1, based on Android 14, ensuring updates until Android 21. This bold move solidifies Samsung’s position as the leading Android smartphone manufacturer globally. Given the robust capabilities of modern flagship smartphones, they can indeed be supported for extended update cycles.
In a recent development, long-term support for the Linux kernel has been reduced from six years to just two years. This adjustment poses challenges for OEMs in sustaining support for devices over more extended periods. Nevertheless, Google has taken a noteworthy step by upgrading the Linux kernel from version 5.1 to 6.1 for all its Tensor-powered Pixel phones. It appears that Samsung is poised to align with Google’s strategy, indicating that significant kernel upgrades will be implemented for flagship Samsung phones as well.
