Reliance Jio Collaborates with Nvidia to Create India’s Own ChatGPT-Like LLM

At its 46th Annual General Meeting (AGM), Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, unveiled an ambitious plan to develop India-specific AI models and AI applications tailored to various use-cases within the country. To realize this vision, Reliance has formed a strategic partnership with the American GPU manufacturer, Nvidia, with the goal of constructing a localized Large Language Model (LLM) designed specifically for India.

Indeed, you read that correctly! Reliance aspires to create an India-centric alternative to ChatGPT, and they are enlisting Nvidia’s expertise in the field to bring this vision to life. Nvidia will supply Reliance with the necessary technologies to transform this vision into a reality. Below, you can find further details about this collaboration.

Jio and Nvidia Collaborate to Develop India-Specific LLM

Nvidia has officially announced a strategic collaboration with Jio, the telecommunications division of Reliance Industries, aimed at bolstering AI infrastructure and Generative AI applications for the benefit of the vast online community. Within this partnership, Nvidia is set to provide its cutting-edge GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and DGX Cloud infrastructure to empower Jio in crafting a tailored Large Language Model (LLM) catering to “more than 450 million Jio users.” This LLM will undergo training using India’s rich linguistic diversity.

Nvidia underscores the substantial impact of this cooperation, asserting that it will result in the establishment of an infrastructure surpassing the capabilities of the current fastest supercomputer in India.

The cloud-based infrastructure will assist Jio in developing highly localized AI products and services. Furthermore, it will offer a platform for researchers, developers, startups, and scientists to build upon its AI models. In accordance with the agreement, Jio will oversee the management of the AI infrastructure, hosting it within its AI-ready data centers boasting up to 2,000 MW capacity. Jio will also handle the subsequent rollout and customer interactions.

Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s founder and CEO, expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership while visiting India, stating, “We are delighted to partner with Reliance to build state-of-the-art AI supercomputers in India. India has scale, data, and Leveraging state-of-the-art AI computing infrastructure, Reliance aims to develop its proprietary large language models capable of fueling generative AI applications that are specifically tailored for India and intended to benefit the Indian populace.

This collaboration underscores Reliance’s commitment to democratizing AI access, with the potential to significantly impact various sectors in India, including government, businesses, and consumers. As for whether Jio can develop a localized LLM model to rival the likes of ChatGPT, the future will reveal the extent of their achievements.
