OnePlus has gained renown for its flagship smartphones, often marred by the recurring green line display issue following software updates. Although other phone makers experienced similar problems, OnePlus devices, particularly the OnePlus 8, 9, and 9R, seemed more susceptible. To their credit, the company initiated a complimentary display replacement initiative, indicating their commitment to addressing the issue. Given the emergence of the first green line problem on the OnePlus 12, it’s likely they’ll continue such programs in the future.
In the OnePlus Community, a user reported spotting a green line on their 15-day-old OnePlus 12. They emphasized that the phone had not been subjected to any rough handling or drops. Interestingly, their use of “Finally” suggests they had been eagerly anticipating this issue, indicating their satisfaction with its appearance.
OnePlus 12 Faces Green Line Problem Again
The green line problem has persisted across several OnePlus models, starting from the OnePlus 8 up to the OnePlus 10, with sporadic occurrences even on the OnePlus 9. Often, users notice a faint green, almost greyish line running vertically from top to bottom on the right side of the screen.
Analyzing images of the issue, it’s challenging to determine if the affected pixels have turned green. However, considering past experiences, the likelihood of this being a hardware defect is considerable. Recently, a OnePlus 12 owner shared their encounter with this issue on the OnePlus Community, just 15 days after acquiring the device.
While there’s no official statement from OnePlus regarding this matter yet, if the problem becomes widespread among OnePlus 12 units, given the recent launch of the phone, an official response can be anticipated soon.
It’s important to recognize that the green line issue isn’t unique to OnePlus devices. Samsung’s Note 20 Ultra faced similar problems last year, with users experiencing green lines on the display following a software update. Additionally, POCO, a sub-brand of Xiaomi, also encountered numerous complaints from users regarding green line issues.
The common denominator among many smartphones affected by this problem is the use of AMOLED displays. Unlike LCDs, AMOLED displays are more susceptible to pixel degradation over time. This susceptibility to degradation can manifest as the appearance of green lines on the screen.
In cases where a software update triggers the issue, likely, that the update has inadvertently altered the voltage or frequency settings of the display panel. These changes can disrupt the display’s normal operation, resulting in an anomaly.
What Next?
If confirmed as the notorious green line problem, OnePlus must promptly address it by recalling the affected units. Having already suffered brand reputation setbacks from past green line issues, a recurrence with OnePlus 12 devices could deal a fatal blow to the company’s integrity.
