Does Starfield Support Multiplayer Co-op? Here’s the Answer!

Adding multiplayer features to a game can significantly enhance the gaming experience, especially with co-op support that allows you to enjoy the adventure with friends. Many recent titles, like Diablo 4 and No Man’s Sky, have embraced co-op gameplay. Given this trend, people are naturally curious about whether Bethesda’s upcoming sci-fi RPG, Starfield, will offer multiplayer or co-op features. In this guide, we’ll explore whether you’ll be able to explore Starfield’s vast universe with a friend or if it’s strictly a single-player journey.

Is Starfield a Multiplayer Game?

Since the game’s reveal, players have been speculating about the possibility of multiplayer in Starfield. The expansive universe of Starfield seems ripe for multiplayer exploration and cooperation. However, Bethesda has confirmed that Starfield will not have multiplayer support at launch.

Bethesda has been clear in its vision for Starfield, it’s designed as a single-player sci-fi RPG. The game follows in the footsteps of Bethesda’s previous titles like Fallout and Elder Scrolls, delivering a rich single-player experience with the addition of new features. As a result, multiplayer co-op is not part of the game’s design. This applies to both traditional online multiplayer and local split-screen co-op.

While the initial launch version of the game won’t include multiplayer, there’s always the possibility of future changes. Bethesda might collaborate with Zenimax Online to develop multiplayer capabilities for Starfield. However, it’s important to note that Zenimax Online is a separate entity focused on The Elder Scrolls: Online, an MMORPG set in the Elder Scrolls universe. It’s also plausible that modders could eventually introduce multiplayer co-op to the game.

Bethesda’s past experience with Fallout 76, an online multiplayer RPG set in the Fallout universe, likely influenced their decision for Starfield. Fallout 76 encountered a troubled launch, plagued with bugs, technical issues, and online complications. It seems that Bethesda Game Studios aims to deliver a satisfying single-player experience without revisiting the challenges of online play.

Although Starfield won’t feature multiplayer, players can anticipate interacting with various in-game companions and teaming up with them to explore the vast cosmos. The early access release of Starfield is scheduled for September 1, 2023, for PC and Xbox Series X/S users, with a broader release on September 6. For those eagerly awaiting the game’s launch, a countdown to Starfield’s release is available in the linked article.
