Amazon has integrated an AI assistant tool called Rufus into its shopping platform. Trained on Amazon’s vast catalog of products and information from the internet, Rufus functions like a typical AI chatbot but is embedded directly within the Amazon app. Users can ask Rufus questions about products, shopping needs, compare different items, discover new products, and more.
Rufus: Your Amazon Shopping Assistant
Amazon is currently beta-launching Rufus to a small group of customers in the US, with plans to expand availability to more customers in the coming weeks. The e-commerce giant has leveraged its extensive shopping app dataset to develop a custom Large Language Model (LLM) for Rufus, enabling it to cater to customers’ personalized needs.
In addition to product catalogs, Amazon has utilized customer reviews and community Q&As to train Rufus. Users can ask Rufus a wide range of questions, from general inquiries like “What should I consider before buying headphones?” to specific requests like “Show me dinosaur toys for a 5-year-old.” Rufus also considers the context of the product a user is viewing and tailors its responses accordingly.
To begin using Rufus, ensure your Amazon app is updated and then type your question directly into the search bar. Alternatively, you can tap on the star-like symbol at the bottom of the app to launch Rufus. It’s worth noting that Amazon introduced AI-generated review highlights last year, which are already available in most regions. With the addition of the Rufus AI shopping assistant, Amazon is further integrating generative AI capabilities into its shopping app.
