Initial iOS 18 Code Indicates All iPhone 16 Variants To get A18 Chipset

While iOS 17 iterations will persist in the coming months, Apple is diligently forging ahead with its next significant iPhone software update – iOS 18. Following historical trends, the unveiling of iOS 18 might take place at WWDC 2024 scheduled for June, with the refined public version likely to debut around September. MacRumors recently gathered insights from multiple sources regarding early development stages of iOS 18. Speculation indicates that alongside the iPhone 16 series, Apple might break away from its recent practice of employing year-old chips in non-Pro iPhone models.

For context, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus were equipped with the A16 chipset derived from the prior year’s iPhone 14 Pro model. Conversely, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max were outfitted with the new A17 Pro chipset.

According to MacRumors, the operating system, codenamed “Crystal,” contains allusions to four yet-to-be-revealed iPhone models. This information closely corresponds with existing details and predictions surrounding the anticipated iPhone 16 series. The models identified are:

  • D47 (iPhone 16)
  • D48 (iPhone 16 Plus)
  • D93 (iPhone 16 Pro)
  • D94 (iPhone 16 Pro Max)

As observed, the current list excludes the much-speculated iPhone 16 Ultra. It’s plausible that the potential additional fifth model within the iPhone 16 lineup could be associated with the “D94” device identifier. Yet, it would seem more logical to have a distinct identifier for the “Ultra” model, perhaps labeled as “D94a” or “D95,” offering clear differentiation from other hardware configurations.

The code extracted from the operating system also implies that every variant within the iPhone 16 series will incorporate the new SoC (System on Chip) labeled as “t8140” or “Tihiti,” an internal designation used by Apple for its A18 chip. While all models might integrate the same fundamental chip, Apple might consider branding distinctions like A18 and A18 Pro to delineate between chips employed in standard and flagship models.

Apple developed an alternative variant of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, identified as “D84S,” specifically for in-house 5G modem testing, denoted by the appended “S” indicating “Sinope,” Apple’s proprietary 5G modem codename. However, this device isn’t intended for public availability, serving instead as an indicator of Apple’s naming conventions for device identifiers.

Apart from the A18 chipset, the operating system hints at potential inclusion of a Broadcom Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module for the upcoming iPhone 16 range. Nevertheless, detailed specifications remain undisclosed. Considering the expected launch of the iPhone 16 series in September 2024, insights gleaned from early code leaks might not necessarily reflect the final release.

Apple may opt for a unified chipset family for the iPhone 16 lineup, or it could potentially chart a different course altogether. As more leaks surface in the upcoming weeks, we’ll continue to update this information.
