Honkai Star Rail 2.0 has launched, unveiling Penacony as the newest Trailblaze destination and introducing a fresh set of trailblazing missions for players. In these new missions, Firefly plays a significant role, though her true identity remains shrouded in mystery. Here, we delve into the question of who Firefly is in Honkai Star Rail and whether she is dead.
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers from the latest Honkai Star Rail 2.0 Trailblaze mission.
Understanding Firefly in Honkai Star Rail
Firefly was first introduced in the Honkai Star Rail 1.6 livestream – Crown of the Mundane and Divine Special Program, where Sunday revealed the lineup of new characters invited to the Penacony Charmony Festival.
First Appearance of Firefly in Penacony HSR
Upon the release of Honkai Star Rail 2.0, players are introduced to Firefly during the Sleepless Night mission. Following the Nameless Dream with Dr. Edward, a disturbance near the plaza draws the trailblazer’s attention, where they come across two thugs threatening Firefly, alleging that she is a stowaway.
Gallagher intervenes and stops the scuffle. He is a security officer of the Bloodhound Family, introduced as one of the latest characters in HSR drip marketing. Gallagher explains to the thugs that Firefly cannot be the stowaway they are looking for, as they seek a silver-haired boy, not a girl.
After the scuffle, Firefly informs the Trailblazer that she is a local from the Iris Family. She reveals that she is a stage performer and also works as a guide near Glaux Avenue. Grateful for the Trailblazer’s help, Firefly offers to show them around, and they accept, leading to Firefly accompanying the Trailblazer for a significant portion of the new trailblaze missions.
HSR Firefly: Lies, Wish and Illness
After accompanying Firefly and encountering an old friend, Sampo, who is later revealed to be Sparkle in disguise, the Trailblazers realize that Firefly is not actually a local and has been lying about her identity.
Firefly later admits to being a stowaway and reveals that she is an interstellar refugee, much like many other Penacony locals, and her hometown was destroyed by either the Legion or the Swarm.
She then discusses her illness, the Entropy Loss Syndrome, which is an irreversible chronic dissociation of her physical structure, causing her to slowly fade away. This illness progressively slows her actions, blurring the line between her body and the world around her. Despite this, she remains aware of the distinction between reality and dreams, which becomes shattered in her consciousness.
Firefly expresses her desire to find a cure for her illness in Penacony and live a normal life. She also reveals that she is seeking the Watchmaker’s Legacy but does not wish to become enemies with the Trailblazer. Like the Astral Express, Firefly received a different invitation with the same question, “Why does Life Slumber?”.
HSR Firefly Death
After the conversation with Firefly, the Trailblazer attempts to return to Reverie but is intercepted by Sparkle, who sends them to the real Dreamscape.
In the real Dreamscape, Firefly and the Trailblazer face off against ‘Something Unto Death,’ the new game boss added in Honkai Star Rail 2.0.
They are eventually rescued by Black Swan, who brings the Trailblazer back to reality. Subsequently, Trailblazer, Himeko, and March 7th decide to enter the Reverie Hotel Dreamscape, which was previously thought to be under construction, in order to uncover the secrets of Dreamscape and Penacony. Black Swan assists the Trailblazer in entering the Reverie Hotel Dreamscape, where they encounter Acheron.
Within the Reverie Dreamscape, Black Swan discloses that Firefly is present and being pursued by Death. When they finally reach her, Firefly is attacked by Death and appears to be killed as Death impales her through the chest from behind.
Is Firefly Dead?
While it may seem that Firefly perished from Death’s attack in the recent Trailblaze mission, it is highly unlikely in our view. Firefly did not leave behind a body; instead, it seemed as though her consciousness shattered.
Following the incident, Black Swan instructed the Trailblazer to gather any remaining memories of Firefly, indicating that she may still be salvageable. However, this is purely speculative, and we all must await further official information.
Is Firefly the Pilot of Sam?
Sam is the fourth and final Stellaron hunter, who has already appeared in Penacony and clashed with the Trailblazer. An old leak from some time ago suggested that Firefly is actually the pilot of Sam. However, this leak is outdated and may not be accurate.
Nevertheless, Firefly is no ordinary girl, as she has demonstrated, and we cannot ignore the fact that she is involved in many affairs in Penacony, something a Stellaron Hunter is often associated with. Moreover, the illness she disclosed matches well with the mechanical suit and voice of Sam revealed in Penacony.
Furthermore, Firefly has a connection with Sam, as evidenced by her familiarity with him, referring to him as Mecha in one of her memories. A speculative theory from our side is that Sam is the true identity of Firefly, and the Firefly we knew was a projection of her old memories in Penacony.
Is Firefly Playable in Honkai Star Rail?
Firefly is not currently a playable character in Honkai Star Rail, and there have been no leaks indicating that she will be. However, Sam has been leaked as a playable character. If Firefly and Sam are indeed the same person, then she could be considered a playable character. Sam is rumored to be a 5-star Destruction character with Fire damage type. If Sam becomes playable, it’s likely to be in the Honkai Star Rail 2.2 or 2.3 versions.
