Apex Legends Devs Say Ranked Leaderboard Is Not a Priority

Apex Legends has been delivering an exceptional battle royale experience for over five years. Since its inception, the game has featured a ranked mode, allowing players to showcase their skills and strive to become an Apex Predator, ranking among the top 750 players globally.

Despite ranked mode being a long-standing feature, Respawn Entertainment, the developer of Apex Legends, has not implemented an in-game leaderboard. The group has frequently appealed to show the Apex Predators.

The introduction of a leaderboard for Apex Rumble, the new beta asynchronous tournament mode, had raised hopes that this feature might extend to other modes. Unfortunately, there is disappointing news on that front.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with developers at Respawn and asked about the likelihood of a ranked leaderboard being introduced to Apex Legends in the near future.

Q. With Apex Rumble featuring an in-game leaderboard, is the development team considering a similar addition for the ranked mode?

In response, Chris “C4” Cleroux, the Lead Progression Designer for Apex Legends, disclosed that “leaderboards for the core ranked mode are not currently part of our ongoing discussions.” Although Respawn has hinted at this feature in the past, it seems the decision to add a ranked leaderboard has been postponed.

Chris clarified that leaderboards will remain a regular feature in Rumbles, with additional updates planned for Upheaval on May 7. Moreover, he hinted at something exciting coming by the end of Upheaval. Is this an indication that Respawn needs additional time to evaluate the leaderboard functionality in conjunction with Rumble? As for the consideration of a ranked leaderboard, it seems unlikely at this time.

I believe Apex Legends should have implemented a leaderboard for the ranked mode long ago, providing players with an additional incentive to engage deeply with the game. While badges and banners are commendable rewards, seeing your name among the top 750 players would create a more gratifying experience. The Finals set a precedent by introducing trophies for the top 10 players, and I hope Apex Legends adopts a similar approach.

One of the reasons I speculate Respawn is delaying this feature is the dynamic nature of ranked play. We’ve witnessed ranked mode being revamped twice, and it often faces challenges with boosters and cheaters. Addressing security concerns is an ongoing endeavor. If I were in Respawn’s position, I would also hesitate to introduce a leaderboard that could exacerbate these issues.

What are your thoughts on this? Were you anticipating a ranked leaderboard this season? Drop your opinions in the comment box down underneath.
