Smartphone batteries have significantly advanced, making power banks unnecessary for most users. Batteries with 5000-6000mAh usually last a day or more. However, for extended travel, even these capacities may fall short. OnePlus aims to address this with its recently announced Glacier Battery Technology.
Real-world testing will ultimately determine the true potential of this battery technology, but the brand has already revealed several impressive details at the OnePlus Glacier Battery Technology Communication Meeting. Here’s what you need to know!
Explaining the Glacier Battery in the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro
The Glacier battery in the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro utilizes silicon-carbon anode technology, achieving an energy density of 763Wh/L, which is 23.1% higher than standard graphite batteries. OnePlus collaborated with CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited), a major EV battery manufacturer, to implement this technology, aiming to eliminate reliance on power banks and offer around two days or more of battery life. The key feature of this new technology is indeed its impressive energy density.
In addition, the new Glacier tech-backed battery packs 6% silicon, uses Low Expansion 2nd Gen Silicon, and 4.53V Positive Electrode Material.
The brand introduces a new “voltage stabilization architecture” for its Glacier battery technology, ensuring consistent performance and long-lasting output. OnePlus claims, “This high-performance battery for mobile phones will change users’ charging habits, reduce power anxiety, and enable more people to experience the significant benefits of superior batteries.”
OnePlus Claims More Gaming with Less Charge
The new Glacier tech reportedly offers two hours of gaming from just five minutes of charging, addressing the common concern of low battery life among mobile gamers.
Connecting your phone to a charger while gaming can lead to overheating and throttling. Additionally, it can be uncomfortable for gamers to hold their devices as they typically would. The extended gaming times being advertised are a positive development.
The OnePlus Ace 3 Pro features a 6,100mAh Glacier tech battery that charges from 1% to 100% in just 36 minutes, showcasing a groundbreaking combination of rapid charging capabilities.
Total Capacity, Minimal Weight
The new Glacier battery will be smaller yet provide more backup than larger 5000mAh batteries. Its efficiency likely stems from the “high-capacity Biomimetic Silicon-Carbon materials.”
This enables slimmer phones while significantly enhancing battery life. In 2024, it’s clear that no one wants to carry a bulky phone, making this feature highly appreciated.
OnePlus claims that Glacier technology enhances battery longevity, reducing battery health to only 80% after four years.
Glacier Battery Technology: The Future of Batteries?
While this all looks promising on paper, we can only evaluate its performance once the OnePlus Ace 3 Pro launches in China and possibly comes to India as the OnePlus 13R. If it lives up to OnePlus’s claims, the screen-on times should be impressive.
The Glacier battery technology simplifies activities like gaming and long-distance travel, eliminating the frequent need to search for a charger. I only hope it doesn’t end up being another OnePlus 12R situation.
