Annoyed by Mute and Unmute Notification Pop-ups on AirPods? Here’s the Quick Fix!

In recent months, many users have reported experiencing persistent mute and unmute notifications on their AirPods. Despite previous attempts to resolve the issue, complaints have resurfaced, indicating that the problem persists. Users frequently encounter the mute/unmute notification when connecting their AirPods to iPhones, and sometimes the popup appears randomly or when checking the AirPods’ battery status. These issues seem to have started after updating to iOS 17. While awaiting a permanent fix from Apple, there are a few workarounds to address the mute/unmute pop-ups when connecting AirPods.

Fix 1: Change Call Controls on AirPods

Some users have found success in resolving the constant mute/unmute pop-ups by adjusting the End Call setting of their AirPods. This setting allows users to determine how to end a call with their AirPods or AirPods Pro. To try this workaround:

1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone and tap on your AirPods. Alternatively, navigate to Settings -> Bluetooth -> Your AirPods.

2. In the Calls Control section, tap on End Call and change it to Press Once.

If the previous workaround doesn’t resolve the issue, you should try forgetting and then reconnecting your AirPods with your iPhone or iPad. This can help eliminate any complex bugs or glitches that may be causing the annoying mute and unmute pop-ups on your AirPods. Resetting your AirPods essentially restores them to their default settings.

To reset your AirPods, follow these steps:

1. On your iPhone, open Settings -> Bluetooth and tap on the small ā€œiā€ icon next to your AirPods.

2. Scroll to the bottom and select Forget This Device.

3. Confirm your decision by tapping Forget Device.

4. Afterward, pair your AirPods with your iPhone again.

Fix 2: Update Firmware on your AirPods

If you’re still encountering mute and unmute messages, your AirPods might require a firmware update. It’s important to note that Apple doesn’t notify users about AirPods firmware updates through their iPhone or iPad. Instead, these updates are automatically pushed when your AirPods are connected to your iPhone/iPad and there’s a stable internet connection.

Since firmware updates can enhance overall performance, it’s a good idea to stay informed about them. To avoid any issues and ensure that your AirPods receive any available updates, you can follow these steps:

1. Place your AirPods or AirPods Pro in the charging case and connect them to a charger.

2. Keep the lid of the charging case open and position the case (with AirPods inside) near your iPhone. Ensure that your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network or has an active data plan.

These are the three methods to address random mute and unmute notification pop-ups on AirPods. We hope Apple releases a software update soon to resolve this issue permanently. In the meantime, you can try the above workarounds to manage the situation.
