The U.S. Bureau of Prisons has projected that Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX, will be released in December 2044 four years earlier than his original 25-year sentence.
As reported by Business Insider, Bankman-Fried is now expected to be released on December 14, 2044. He was originally sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted in March 2024 on seven counts of fraud and conspiracy by a jury in Manhattan.
The reduction in his sentence to an estimated 21 years is attributed to credit for good behavior, involvement in rehabilitation or educational programs, and the time he already spent in custody before sentencing.
A spokesperson from the Bureau of Prisons explained that release dates take into account what is known as “Good Conduct Time.” Inmates can earn up to 54 days off their sentence for each year served, provided they maintain good behavior while incarcerated.
Business Insider also mentioned that they reached out to Bankman-Fried’s legal team for comment, but had not received a response at the time of publication.
In addition to earning time off for good behavior, inmates can also reduce their sentences by participating in certain rehabilitation or educational programs within the prison system. Time spent in custody prior to sentencing may also be credited toward their total prison term.
This applies to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was jailed two months before his trial after his bail was revoked. The revocation followed reports that he had shared private writings of his ex-girlfriend and former Alameda Research CEO, Caroline Ellison, with a journalist.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Prisons has estimated that Caroline Ellison will be released in May 2026, which aligns with her original two-year sentence.
Earlier in April, Bankman-Fried was transferred from a high-risk detention center known for its violence and nicknamed “Victimville” to a lower-security federal facility in California.
Although no official reason was provided for the move, his legal team had previously requested the transfer, citing his autism diagnosis and the fact that he had no prior criminal record as key considerations.
