PUBG to Transition to Unreal Engine 5 with Fresh Content

The battle royale shooter formerly known as Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds, now called PUBG: Battlegrounds, may not have the same luster it enjoyed during its illustrious six-year run. However, developer Krafton isn’t giving up on the game, as they’ve outlined plans for 2024 and beyond that could help restore its former glory.

According to an official YouTube video and their website, PUBG is set to receive new features that will enhance the gameplay experience. These include destructible environments, gunplay updates, and a significant engine change.

One of the most substantial changes coming to PUBG is the move from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, which the developers have dubbed “the start of a new journey.” However, it remains unclear whether this engine migration will also bring the game to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Despite its waning popularity, PUBG: Battlegrounds appears poised for a revival, with Krafton’s commitment to introducing substantial updates and improvements that could reignite interest in the once-iconic battle royale title.

In addition to the engine migration, PUBG: Battlegrounds will introduce destructible environments, allowing players to dig up protective covers or use explosives to create cover holes around the map. As demonstrated in the video, this feature will enable players to gain a tactical advantage during matches by providing shelter from incoming gunfire. Players can expect to experience these destructible environments in the upcoming April update.

Moreover, Krafton is “laying the groundwork for a User Generated Content” system, which will empower players with tools to craft their own content. This move could foster the growth of a creator ecosystem within the PUBG community, potentially breathing new life into the game.

With these significant updates on the horizon, including the transition to Unreal Engine 5, the introduction of destructible environments, and the potential for user-generated content, PUBG: Battlegrounds appears poised for a renaissance. Krafton’s commitment to revitalizing the once-pioneering battle royale title could very well recapture the magic that made it a cultural phenomenon during its initial years.

PUBG: Battlegrounds’ gunplay is also receiving a much-needed overhaul. While the performance of commonly used weapons will remain unchanged, lesser-used firearms will undergo adjustments to enhance their effectiveness. Furthermore, Krafton has committed to conducting weapons and balance updates every two months, ensuring a fresh and fair experience for all players. On March 13, 2024, players can get a taste of the SMG rebalancing in arcade mode.

Other notable updates include the introduction of new traversal mechanics, exciting collaborations, an improved matchmaking system, and more.

If you’re a PUBG PC player, there’s plenty to look forward to in 2024 as the game undergoes a significant revitalization. From the transition to Unreal Engine 5 and the addition of destructible environments to the promise of user-generated content and regular gameplay tweaks, Krafton appears determined to recapture the magic that once made PUBG: Battlegrounds a cultural phenomenon.
