Ever found yourself eyeing a dress or a cool jacket online but unsure if it would actually suit you? Google has a solution for that called “Try it on,” and people are already saying it could revolutionize shopping.

“Try it on” is a new feature within Google’s AI Mode, unveiled at yesterday’s Google I/O event. It lets you see how different clothes would look on you with incredibly realistic results far beyond the basic virtual closets you’ve probably seen in other shopping apps.

To create such a realistic effect, Google uses a custom Imagen model that grasps the shape and depth of your body. It also recognizes different fabric textures and how they move, based on the product images. By blending these details, the model produces a result that makes it look like you’re actually wearing that $1,000 Louis Vuitton dress.

How to Experience Google’s New “Try It On” Feature

“Try it on” is included in AI Mode and is currently available only to users in the U.S. If you’re outside the region, you’ll need a VPN to access it. Now that you know that, here’s how to get started.

  • Launch the Google app on your Android device and tap the beaker icon located at the top left.
  • Scroll down until you see the “Try things on virtually” section, then tap Try things on to get started.
  • Choose a style and select an outfit you’d like to try.

You can explore even more styles from Google’s Shopping catalog, but keep in mind that the feature doesn’t work with every item. It’s a bit odd some clothing pieces will have the “Try it on” option, while others won’t.

New Era of Shopping or Privacy Nightmare

The feature just launched yesterday, and folks on X are already buzzing with excitement. Many are trying it out for the first time and loving what they see so much so that some are hoping it becomes a permanent part of their shopping routine.

Even well-known tech YouTuber MKBHD shared a post on X explaining how the feature works and why it’s useful. It lets you try on clothes virtually, so you can see how they fit before deciding to buy.

However, he also highlighted a potential issue: you don’t have to use your own photo you could upload someone else’s and dress them in embarrassing outfits, which could lead to bullying. Another concern is privacy. The feature asks you to upload a full-body image that stays within the tool, so you won’t have to keep re-uploading it every time you try on something new.

While these concerns are valid, there’s no denying that this is a groundbreaking feature with enormous potential. It would be great if Google made it a default option for images, making it easy to try on any piece of clothing without hassle. Ideally, other apps should be able to integrate this technology too.
